Lagos battling with highly contagious cholera strain -Health Commissioner

Dr. Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State commissioner for health, says the state government is battling a strain of cholera described as highly aggressive and contagious. On Sunday, Abayomi said Lagos has recorded 17 confirmed cases of cholera and 15 fatalities so far. He said laboratory investigation has confirmed the strain to be cholera sub-type O-1, adding that the subtype is associated with more severe diseases. The death toll as a result of a cholera outbreak in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, has risen to five and it includes a four-month-old baby and 33-year-old pregnant woman. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health in Ogun State, Dr Ayinde Akinsanya disclosed this on Friday, during a press briefing in Abeokuta.
