The ancient town of Sokoto came to stand still and social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols were abandoned as the Tijaniyah, a Muslim group, appointed a former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the new Caliph in Nigeria.
In photos shared on Facebook by the ex-Emir’s spokesperson, Saadatu Ahmad, Sanusi, who flew in from Oxford University in England, where he is a visiting scholar, was seen on a rostrum, addressing a mammoth crowd with hundreds of people clustered as they stood under the open sky.
Before attending the ceremony, the flamboyant ex-Emir paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto before proceeding to the venue of the programme also attended by the Sokoto State governor, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal.
It was gathered that the position was previously held by the late Emir of Kano (Sanusi’s late grandfather) and lately held by the late philanthropist Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu.
