Ekiti State Government is taking proactive steps to ensure that the fresh outbreak of Lassa Fever which reportedly claimed the live of a medical doctor in Asaba, Delta State does not spread to the State
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Olurotimi Ojo who made this known in Ado-Ekiti during a meeting with stakeholders in the Health sector said the Emergency Outbreak Centre (EOC) constituted in the state in the wake of the national outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in January has been reactivated and placed on high alert in view of the recent development
According to Ojo , the state government organized the forum with stakeholders to harmonize plans on how to improve surveillance, infection and prevention and control at the various health facilities in the state
He said efforts were in top gear to also improve environmental sanitation and embark on massive public sensitization across the state on the need for people to embrace healthy practices and rid their environment of rats and other vectors of deadly disease
He disclosed that six subcommittees that include case management, contact tracing , social mobilization, Infection Control, laboratory – evacuation -decontamination and logistics have been set up to prevent and effectively tackle any suspected case of the disease in the state noting that treatment and isolation centres has been set up at the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido and the Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, Ado-Ekiti for isolation and treatment of suspected and confirmed cases of the disease.
The Commissioner commended stakeholders in the health sector in the state for their collaborative efforts with the present administration in the state and for effectively managing the one confirmed case of the the disease in the state last January , adding that all 53 people who had contact with patient were traced and placed on surveillance while two family members who had close contact with the patient were quarantined for the mandatory 21 days .
