At 5.50pm Nigerian time, the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest in his home town, Daura, Katsina State, following a brief Islamic funeral rites.
His body, draped in Nigeria’s national colours, which arrived earlier in the afternoon on Tuesday from London, was interred at his private residence after a brief but solemn ceremony attended by top dignitaries from across the country and beyond.
Leading Nigeria’s federal government delegation was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other top officials.
Also present were Atiku Abubakar, State governors, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, and several members of the Federal Executive Council and National Assembly.
The funeral included a military farewell, honouring Buhari’s decades of service to the nation — first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London clinic at the age of 82.
The federal government has declared a national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast across the country in his honour.
