Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, a Professor of Botany and Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has emerged as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after a contest involving eight candidates.
Ogundipe, was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Academic and Research at UNILAG, he now succeeds Prof. Rahamon Ade Bello, the 11th and outgoing VC who will leave the 11th Floor of the Senate Building on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2017, when his 5-year tenure will end.
He emerged as the preferred candidate out of the eight Professors who faced a 3-man panel headed by the Pro-Chancellor of the Institution, Dr Bolanle Olawale Babalakin.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Mr Toyin Adebule, Prof Ogundipe emerged first among the contestants and his appointment was confirmed on Friday by the governing council.
Adebule disclosed that in line with guidelines for the appointment of VC, three candidates, Prof Ogundipe, Prof Olukayode Amund, former Dean, Students Affairs and Prof Ayodeji Olukoju, former VC of Caleb Universty were nominated for final consideration by council.
The statement added that at the governing council meeting held on Friday, October 27, the council approved the appointment of Prof Ogundipe, who scored the highest mark during the selection interview as the new VC .
The new VC took over as DVC from Prof Babajide Alo on April 1, 2016.
He was appointed as Professor in 2002, was also the Director of Academic Planning and a member of many scientific organisations.
He is a life member of International Society of Plant Morphologist, Fellow of Cohort 9 of the Leadership for Environment and Development, and the Linnaean Society, in London.
Prof Ogundipe had reviewed many scientific academic journals and served as external examiner to many universities, including the University of Johannesburg.
