A Mushin based popular area boy, Jamiu Ibrahim, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a policeman.
Ibrahim allegedly assaulted the policeman while resisting arrest after being found in possession of a substance suspected to be hemp.
The defendant was arraigned on three counts of manner likely to cause breach of peace and assault.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Koti Aondohemba, said the incident happened on April 30, 2019, in the Ojuwoye area of Mushin, Lagos.
Aondohemba said, “A policeman, Corporal Dotun Lijofi, who was on a patrol sighted Ibrahim with a substance suspected to be hemp and arrested him. In the process, the suspect started fighting with the policeman and inflicted injuries on his right hand.”
He said the offences contravened sections 168 (d), 173, 56 (a), of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
The charge read in part, “That you, Jamiu Ibrahim, on April 30, 2019, around 1.40pm at Ojuwoye Junction, Mushin, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by being in possession of a substance suspected to be hemp.
“That you, Jamiu Ibrahim, on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district, did assault Corporal Dotun Lijofi, attached to Mushin division while performing his lawful duty, by inflicting injuries on his right fingers.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him before the presiding magistrate, Mrs O. A. Tanimola.
She granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
Tanimola ruled that the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
