The man who is most favoured to become the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, should President Goodluck Jonathan have his way is Nahzeem Olufemi Mimiko, the immediate younger brother to Ondo State Governor, Segun Mimiko and incumbent vice chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.
He is an erudite scholar and author. His choice as Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University was not without hiccups;
He was denied the vice chancellorship by ex-Gov. Olusegun Agagu of the Peoples Democratic Party, because his brother, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko was involved in a bitter legal battle with the PDP led government over the 2007 governorship election in Ondo State. In February 2009, an Appeal court sitting in Benin nullified Agagu’s election and declared his elder brother, Olusegun Mimiko as the winner of the 2007 governorship election in Ondo State, in January of the following year, he too was appointed vice chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, thereby setting a national record of the visitor and vice chancellor of a government owned university coming from the same university.
He has been a major player and stabilizing factor in his brother’s government, pulling the strings behind the scene. Worthy of mention was during a political crisis involving the Ondo State house of Assembly and the governor during the run up to his second term election, the younger Mimiko was drafted in to settle the grievances of the assembly men.
Mimiko was born in May 1960 in Ondo, Ondo State, Nigeria. He attended Ondo Aglican Grammer School in 1973 and St. Joseph’s College from 1973 to 1977. He obtained a B.Sc. (Political Science) and M.Sc. (International Relations) from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Nigeria.
His choice for the job might be traceable to his brother’s chummy relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan. Aside Prof. Mimiko’s rumoured membership of the PDP since he has always been involved in his brother’s political activities from his days in the Alliance for Democracy, Labour Party and lately the PDP, if eventually Prez. Jonathan nominates him as INEC chairman, he carries the burden of lack of trust from opposition politicians and millions of Nigerians who would wonder howhe would be an unbiased umpire in an election where his blood brother has vested interest and his own chummy relationship with the PDP.
