Some Progressive governors, with the assistance of anti-Oshiomhole forces in the party’s National Working Committee, it was learnt, were actually, in the next few days, making moves to call the party’s National Executive Council’s meeting where the embattled national chairman’s fate would be finally removed from office.
Sources told National Infinity that some APC governors, led by the Ekiti State Governor who is also Chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, acting in connivance with Edo State Governor and with backings from Zamfara state chapter of the party, and some aggrieved national officers had perfected plan to convene a meeting of the party’s NEC, where Oshiomhole would be replaced with a candidate of their choice.
A high-ranking member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The governors are considering calling for an emergency National Executive Council meeting to consider the way forward.”
The move according to the source “is not just about Oshiomhole, but about the future of the party beyond 2023 when some of the present gladiators including Kayode Fayemi are planning to run for higher offices.”
That was the reason that only the party’s chapters in Edo, Ekiti and Zamfara States have so far expressed their support and affirmation for the Abuja court ruling.
The immediate plan was to appoint an acting National Chairman and prepare for an amenable candidate of their choice as substantive chairman so as to checkmate elders of the party such as Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu from taking control and dictating who gets what in 2023.
They are considering asking him to honourably resign but with the reprieve coming the way of Oshiomhole during a visit to the President where Muhammadu Buhari told the embattled National Chairman that the court judgement still permits him to function as the National Chairman of the party pending the final determination of the case.
