The Oyo state governor “Abiola Ajimobi has warned that the state government will not hesitate to bring the full force of the law to bear on anyone who is found guilty of any acts of mutilation and harmful traditional practices against women. The governor in his keynote address at the high level meeting on female genital mutilation held at the western hall sectariat,Ibadan said the elimination of female genital mutilation is a specific target under goal five of the Sustainable Development Goals and all requisite laws and policies will be put in place to make this change possible. His word “On the part of the government of Oyo State, I would like to allay the fears of all stakeholders by giving you the assurance that we are fully committed to this fight against female genital mutilation and this will be backed by political will and affirmative action in support of our women.” Wife of the state Governor Mrs. Florence Ajimobi,in her welcome address discribed Female genital mutilation as an harmful practice with dire health consequences for women as well as negative social and economic impact on victims and the society. She said in spite of the campaign over the years to end female genital mutilation or female circumcision, statistics show that Oyo State ranks third among States in Nigeria that have the highest prevalence of this evil phenomenon coming behind Osun and Ekiti and ahead of Ebonyi, Imo and Lagos. Mrs Florence therefore called on members of the State House of Assembly to pass into law the Violence Against Persons Bill, saying this will go a long way in ensuring that people conform to the zero tolerance for female genital mutilation crusade. “When our clamuoring is further backed by appropriate laws and policies at the State level, achieving our set goals will be an easy task” She said. Also the wife of Osun state governor Mrs Serifat Aregbesola enjoined the general public to see the campaign not just women’s thing but as a burden
