It was a big day for Rotary in Nigeria and District 9110 in particular as District Governor, Rotary International, District 9110, Nigeria, Bola Oyebade, on, 24th of June, 2021 commissioned the newly constructed Prostate Cancer Centre at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu, Ogun State.
The purposely built centre is the first in Africa to be built by any Rotary Club or District and it is the second purposely built structure by District 9110 after the Rotary Vocational Centre, Igbogbo built by PDG Ogunbadejo in 2017/18 Rotary year.
Construction works on the ultra modern centre commenced in November 2020 as the star project of DG Oyebade for the 2020/21 Rotary year.
Oyebade says it is born out of his passion to support the fight against prostate cancer, the life wrecking disease that has taken the lives of many men in Nigeria, rendering their wives widows and their children fatherless.
The over N100million edifice will also be fully equipped in due course and will cater for both the screening and treatment of prostate cancer.
An elated DG Oyebade expressed delight at the completion of the building in record time and thanked all that worked with him to achieve the landmark.
In her address, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako, who stood in for the state governor, Prince Capo Abiodun, commended the Rotary District 9110 for fulfilling their promise.
In her words, “I was here in November last year for the ground breaking ceremony of this building and the DG assured us that we will be back in 8 months time to commission it.
I am happy to be here today to commission this building in less than 8 months.”
The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker; the Acting Chief Medical Director of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital; Rotarian Tayo Lawal, who is also a Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi Torungbuwa II, the Akarigbo of Remo Land; staff of the hospitals; as well as some other government officials were present to witness the event.
Also present at the commissioning was the Prostate Cancer Centre Committee Chairman, Assistant Governor Tunde Alimi; the Prostate Cancer Building Fundraising Committee Chairman, Rotarian Tunde Olaleye; the Prostate Cancer Screening Committee Chairman, Assistant Governor Sola Benson.
District leaders were led to the event by Rotary 9110 District Governor-Elect, Rotarian Remi Bello, others include
District Secretary Mufutau Adelotan, past District Governors, Opportunities Presidents, as well as many other district leaders and Rotarians who were present in-person and virtually.
