7yrs After! Life returns to Chibok as Gov. Zulum invites Women Affairs Minister to commission remodelled Chibok School and resettlement centre
Seven years after the 2014 abduction of the about 200 girls of the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, the Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has rebuilt the school and also constructed a 200 unit resettlement housing scheme for Chibok community.
The remodelled school was equipped with classrooms and desks, a computer room, laboratory, among other facilities, while a security team was being put in place.
Government Secondary School, Chibok, was vandalized after Boko Haram attacked the school on the night of April 14, 2014, destroyed infrastructures and abducted over 200 boarding schoolgirls who were writing Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations organized by the West African Examination Council, WAEC.
Since the attack, the school had remained closed while academic activities were taking place at a primary school in Chibok town.
Gov. Zulum invited the Women Affairs Minister, Pauline Tallen to commission the remodelled school.
Aside unveiling of the GSS in Chibok, Governor Zulum commissioned 200 low cost houses newly built as the permanent resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently residing in temporary camps.
Zulum also commissioned a newly built government lodge to encourage routine visits to Chibok in order to increase direct access of residents to authorities.
Zulum noted that resettlement efforts were being made possible because of some gains recorded by the federal government in the ongoing peace restoration efforts.
Zullum said “after 7 years of closure, I have today reopened the Government Secondary School Chibok where 276 school girls were abducted on the 14th April 2014.
“We will never allow that unfortunate incident or something similar to that weaken our determination towards providing free and compulsory education to each and every child in our dear state. For now, the school will be operating as a day school and not as a boarding school. He concluded
